While working on a lengthy document, Google Docs allows you to create a bookmark and link it with the other points or data in the document.
It even helps you link two Google Docs documents using bookmarks. In this tutorial, we will review the steps to create and link to bookmarks, including the process to remove them.
Steps to Create a Bookmark in Google Docs
It is easy to add a bookmark in Google Docs. These bookmarks are the points that you want to mark out in your document.
- Open the Google Docs document.
- Afterward, select the text (a word, sentence, or paragraph) where you want to add a bookmark.
- Then, go to Insert and hover over to the Bookmark in the drop-down menu.
- Once you click the bookmark option, a blue ribbon will appear to the left of the selected text.
Link to a bookmark
After adding the bookmark to the selected text, you can insert a link to that bookmark using the following steps.
- First, select the text that you want to link with the bookmark.
- Now, click on Insert and select the Link option.
- Alternatively, you can directly select the hyperlink icon from the above toolbar.
- In the pop-up menu, click on the Bookmarks and Headings option.
- Next, select the bookmark from the list of options.
- After you insert the link for the bookmark, the selected text will be displayed in blue and underlined, and a menu will appear below.
- When you click on the below link, it will take you directly to the bookmark.
Note: You can add a link by pressing the keyboard shortcut. For Windows, Ctrl + K; for Mac, press Command + K.
Copy, Edit, and Remove the Link
Once you insert the link to the bookmark, you can copy, edit, or remove it from the pop-up box when you click on the linked text.
- Copy: With this option, you can copy the link on your clipboard and paste it anywhere else.
- Edit: Click on the pencil icon and apply to edit the link or text.
- Remove: Select the remove link icon to remove the link to the bookmark.
Use Google Docs Bookmarks to Link Another Document
You need to use the below steps to link two Google Docs using bookmarks.
- Open both documents that you want to link.
- After that, select the text to insert the bookmark.
- Then, click Insert and select the Bookmark option at the bottom.
- Now, click on the Bookmark symbol and select the copy link icon.
- Select the text you want to link in the second document with the bookmark.
- In the toolbar, select the link icon, paste the link in the search box, and click the Apply button.
- Finally, the selected text will change into the linkable text, and you can use this link to reach the bookmark of the first document.
Remove the Bookmarks
- Click on the bookmark symbol that you want to remove.
- In the menu below, click the Remove icon, which looks like a bin.
- In the end, it will remove the bookmark symbol from the text.
