What is the use of Excel YEAR Function?
Use Excel YEAR Function to get the year from a date. In simple words, it will return year value from a date. For example, from 12-Aug-2016 it will return 2016.
Syntax for Excel YEAR Function
serial_number A serial number which represents the date from which you want to get the year value.
More Information on Excel YEAR Function
- Excel store dates as serial numbers.
- It will only return year number if reference date is valid.
- You can only extract year number from a date which is after 01-01-1900.
- It always returns year in four digits.
Examples to understand Excel YEAR Function
In above example, I have used year function to get year number from the dates. You can use this function where you have dates in your data & you only need year number. You can also use TEXT Function to get the year from a date.
In above example, I have used Today Function to get year number from the current date. It will always update the year whenever you recalculate your worksheet.
