# How To Create An Area Chart In Excel

An area chart can help you to present data in a better way.

It’s just like a line chart, but in an area chart, the area below the lines is filled with a color.

You can use an area chart to make a visual trend comparison of your data and to present a trend line for a time period.

In this tutorial, you will learn following things about area charts.

So, let’s get started.

## When to use an area chart

• When you want to show a trend of the categories over a time period.
• You can also use area charts when there is a need to present a cumulative trend.
• Use 100% stacked area chart to create a contribution trend between categories over a time period.

## Steps to Create an Area Chart in Excel

Here, I am using the below dataset to create an area chart in excel.

• Select the data or just select a cell within the data set from which you want to create an area chart.
• Go to → Insert Tab → Charts → Line & Area Charts → Select the required type of the Area Chart.

## Types of Area Chart in Excel

We have 3 types of area chart in excel. You can use them as per your need. Let’s have a look at each of the type for better understanding.

### Normal Area Chart

A simple area chart.

You can use a simple area chart in excel when you want to compare two or more categories for a time period. It will help you to analyze the change in the figures over the time (Years, Months, Days).

In above area chart, I have compared two different categories for a particular time period. It makes the data simple in understanding & effective for presentation.

### Stacked Area Chart

Analyze overall trend.

Stacked area chart is useful when you want to present relationship between two or more categories.

It can also help you to check the change in the total value over the time period (Years, Months, Days).

In above chart, there is a trend of two categories and along with that you can also check the trend of total value over the time.

### 100% Stacked Area Chart

Show percentage contribution.

100% Stacked area chart is used where you want to show the percentage contribution between two or more categories over the time (Years, Months, Days).

This will help you to analyze the change in the contribution of the categories.

In above chart, we have a trend of the percentage contribution of two categories over the time. You can use more than two categories if you need.

## Display Types In Area Charts

You can use either 2D or 3D type of area charts. These display options are available in all types of the area chart.
