How to Use DatedIF Function In Excel

Syntax

DATEDIF(Date1,Date2,Interval)

Date1 The date from where you want to start the calculation of your interval. In simple words, it is the start date of the interval.

Date2 The date to which you want to calculate the interval. In simple words, it is the end date of your interval.

Interval It represents the unit of the time, which will return from the function. We have some specific text strings to represent different time units.

Using “y” as Interval

It will return the complete years between the start date & the end date. It will ignore the months & days which are in excess.

In the above example, we have calculated the interval between two dates by using. And, we get 25 years in the result which are total completed years. But, if you actually check, the difference between two dates is more than 25 years (37 days more).

Using “m” as Interval

It will return the number of months between start date & end date, months which are complete. It will ignore the excess days.

In the above example, we have calculated the interval between two dates. And, we get 301 months in the result which are the total completed months. We have 7 excess days which are not considered in the result.

Using “d” as Interval

It will return the total days between start date & end date. The days are the smallest units between two dates, that’s why you will get total days here.

In above example, we have total days between two days.

Using “ym” as Interval

It will return a number of the complete months over the complete years. In simple words, if you have the total interval of 25 years 1 month & 7 days between two dates, it will return 1 month in the result.

In the above example, we have calculated the number of complete months left after competing years between start date & end date.

Using “yd” as Interval

It will return the number of the days over the complete years. In simple words, if you have a total interval of 25 years & 37 days between two dates, it will return 37 days in the result.

In the above example, we have calculated the number of days left after the complete years between start date & end date.

Using “md” as Interval

It will return the excess number of days over the complete months. In simple words, if you have the total interval of 301 months & 7 days between two dates, it will return 7 days in the result.

In the above example, we have calculated the number of days left after the complete months between start date & end date.

Things To Remember While Using DatedIF Function In Excel

  • DatedIF Formula will ignore the time in date.
  • End date (Date2) should be greater than the start date (Date1)
